Remember Way Back When We Had Wooden Sewing Spools?

I remember playing with these as a child so I would stay out of trouble while Mother sewed.  Well, she didn't have enough spools because I was always into something.  Anyway, how many of you had Daddy put in small nails or like mine wooden pegs?  This was the first way I learned to do any type of handwork, I learned to crochet at 8 but I think Mother was trying to see how serious I was about it so she started me off on this.  Do you remember making snakes?  What about all those potholders?  I made things for my dolls and just all sorts of goofy things.  All this is leading up to the fact that it surprises me how there is this "new" idea on the market.  They are called by all sorts of names but one of my daughters gave me this one called a French Knitting Bee, called that because it is colored to look like a bee.  While I was wondering around in blogland I ran across this flower that is made from  "I-cords", it is at the site linked here.  I suppose like they say everything that is old will come back around in fashion someday.  I wonder where I put my poodle skirt???

  1. Thats a cute Idea. I got my idea from a bib I saw. They say there is nothing new under the sun and I can't believe that I am now old enough to see this come back into style again. I also did it as a kid.

  2. Yes, I totally remember making I-cords with those things that my grandpa put nails into. I knitted a purse recently and had to knit a 22" I-cord using 2 knitting needles - what a hassle, I wished I had that "thing" (I forgot what it's called) to make it. I have to buy one for next time. I think Mary Maxim sells it.

  4. Goodness, I definitely remember those! I loved doing it, but don't think I ever made anything with the finished 'product'.

  5. Well isn't that just the cutest thing? I was really into those pot holders! There were a whole stack of them at home and I don't know how many of them I gave away. I found one of the loom kits and gave it to one of my granddaughters. Sometimes it's nice when something "comes" around again.

  8. I think when there is a dearth of ideas...all the old ideas come recycling back and this must be one of this.Though I don't relate to this there are so many instances in clothes and fashion where I feel it is a replica of the olden times.

  9. I call the French knitting 'thing' a knitting Nancy. As a child I had a wooden cotton reel with four nails hammered into it. I remember making a mat, in the round, but stitching it together was such a faff, it wouldn't stay flat and turned into a bowl! I think children would really enjoy making the flower, with a little guidance, it's so easy. I'm in my mid fifties and love old crafts but I like to put my stamp on them with a modern twist.
